Mission Statement
The Met becomes based on April thirteen, 1870, “to be located within the City of New York, for the cause of establishing and retaining in the stated city a Museum and library of art, of encouraging and developing the study of the nice arts, and the utility of arts to manufacture and realistic existence, of advancing the general information of kindred topics, and, to that end, of furnishing famous instruction.”
This announcement of motive has guided the Museum for over hundred and forty years.
On January 13, 2015, the Trustees of The Metropolitan Museum of Art reaffirmed this statement of purpose and supplemented it with the following announcement of challenge:
