America’s Promise Alliance is devoted to helping to create the conditions for success for all young people, including the millions currently being left behind. Our work is powered by our belief that all children are capable of learning and thriving and that every individual, institution, and sector shares the responsibility to help young people succeed.
We are the nation’s largest partnership of our kind, bringing together hundreds of national nonprofits, businesses, communities, educators, and ordinary citizens behind the idea of making the promise of America accessible to all young people.
America’s Promise Alliance was born from The Presidents’ Summit for America’s Future held in Philadelphia in April 1997. That extraordinary event brought together thousands of leaders from across the country to refocus the nation’s attention on the needs of children and youth. Attended by Presidents Clinton, Bush, Carter, and Ford (with Nancy Reagan representing President Reagan), and chaired by Ret. General Colin Powell, that gathering challenged America to make children and youth a top national priority.
Together, they signed a Summit Declaration that serves as the guiding force for the movement they started and for America’s Promise Alliance. In July 2001, President George W. Bush added his signature. President Barack Obama signed the declaration in September 2014.
The collective work of our Alliance focuses on the five promises we must make and keep to young people to set them up for adult success. These promises, which emerged from the 1997 Presidents’ Summit, served as America’s Promise Alliance’s north star and the organizing framework for the effort of hundreds of communities across the country.

CARING ADULTS — parents and family members, teachers, mentors, coaches, and others who believe in, challenge, and nurture young people.
OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE — to share time and talents with others, build character and competence, and contribute to the civic life of their community.
A HEALTHY START — the right nutrition, exercise, and medical care starting with children’s first years so they can thrive in school and in life.
SAFE PLACES — spaces at home, in school, in the community, and online where youth feel safe and have opportunities to learn, explore and grow.
EFFECTIVE EDUCATION — to develop knowledge and real-world skills so they can fully participate in our economy and our democracy.
The American Dream is at risk for many of our young people. In a nation built on the promise of equal opportunity, not all children have an equal chance to succeed. America’s Promise Alliance is committed to creating the conditions of success – caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, effective education, and opportunities to serve – for all children and youth. We recognize that historical and systemic inequities create barriers that keep too many young people from realizing their American Dream. During this time of opportunity and challenge, we must act with urgency to address and resolve the many issues that limit the fulfillment of the Five Promises, and the potential of every child. We affirm our belief that no matter a young person’s race or ethnicity, address or income, gender or sexual orientation, immigration status, abilities or disabilities, or religion – every child deserves the opportunity to fulfill their American Dream and every adult has a responsibility to make it happen.
The challenges facing today’s children and youth are too complex and interrelated for any one sector or organization to solve alone. Success requires participation from a range of stakeholders working together in coordinated and collaborative ways. This collaborative approach is central to America’s Promise, and our Alliance is the embodiment of it. From individuals to national organizations and all in between – there is a way to make a difference and impact the life of a young person.
